The big 2018 review

It’s important to add some context to our 2018 review, I suppose.

Two competitions with markedly different results and performances that shaped the coach’s destiny.
If we take the league first and in isolation, its safe to say it was a disappointing campaign. There were too many heavy defeats early in the season which meant that the sole objective was getting into the super 8s and avoiding the chance of another million-pound game appearance.

As it happened, they just made it into those 8s and that was down to some really good fortune with Leeds flopping dramatically.

Better to be a lucky coach than a good one?

The cup however is a different story and despite being the giants to be killed in the early rounds, momentum was on our side in the latter stages of the competition.

The season started with four straight losses and the coach bemoaning his team’s lack of a pre-season after the World Cup.

After getting hammered on the opening weekend at Widnes (who went on to get relegated) we backed that up with a home defeat to St Helens and another smacking, this time at Hull KR.
There was late heartbreak at home to Wakefield before the quick return match against KR saw us nudge home by 2 points.

Whilst you could argue the home matches were close, the away performances and results were poor and despite hoping the first win would kick us on, it preceded the worst set of results of the whole campaign.

A nilling at home to Warrington by over 30 points was the final straw for many fans and saw us tweeting #mcnamaraout . We didn’t take the chance to make amends at Hull FC where another battering meant we had one win in the league as we got to Easter. For a club supposedly on a path to winning stuff, this was wholly unacceptable.

You can take losing games, its part of sport after all. But there was no resilience, no fight and very little idea from the sidelines of how to put it right.

After another hammering on Good Friday, there was talk that a new coach would in place before the Easter Monday match with Huddersfield. But it all went a bit quiet, despite rumours of who it might be and McNamara, it seemed, had one last chance.

The Giants were in a similar predicament to the Dragons and just about scraped a side together to get to Perpignan. It was a crucial game between the leagues basement clubs and Dragons put in a strong and positive performance, coming home 27-6.

Performance wise, they backed it up the following week against Wigan, but despite having a large lead, managed to lose it late on.

A trip to Castleford looked like it might seal McNamara’s fate, especially after a 41-0 defeat, but it was at this point that the club’s owner stepped in with a genuine vote of confidence.

The fans were repaid with a scratchy performance at League 1 York in their opening Challenge Cup appearance, but a good second half saw them into the hat for the next round.

League form was better but inconsistent after that with a home win over Hull by a single point followed up with defeat at St Helens. The spirit seemed better though and with Tony Gigot back from his ban and Josh Drinkwater hitting the ground running, the side was beginning to take a better shape.
A favourable cup draw saw another League 1 side in Whitehaven beaten by 50 points before a run of three straight wins in the Super League over Salford (at Magic Weekend), Leeds and Widnes.
In among that was a gritty Challenge Cup win at Huddersfield before a late try saw the same opposition bring that winning run to a halt.

It looked a definitive blow. Since that Easter meeting, both the Giants and Dragons had been steadily eating away at their league deficit and getting back among those looking to stay out of the bottom four.

There looked to be only a single spot in the 8 left for either of the clubs and Huddersfield’s late show seemed to give them pole position.

Dragons needed either Wakefield or reigning champions Leeds to slip up during the run in.
Next up was Leeds away and a ground that usually sees the Dragons beaten quite convincingly. But this day was different and a controlled a positive performance saw a narrow 25-28 victory and the points went home to France.

A heavy win over Castleford at home was followed by a win in Wakefield and suddenly Catalans had beaten their two rivals for the top 8 to drag them into sight.

This new-found spirit saw the Dragons suddenly look competitive on the road and an inspired showing saw them get a crucial point in a draw at Warrington.

A big win against Salford saw us into the top 8 and we would stay there despite losing the following week at Wigan.

It was Leeds who were in the bottom 4 and both Huddersfield and Catalans survived, an outcome back at Easter you would have been mad to suggest.

The boost of not being involved in any sort of relegation play off lifted Dragons who produced their best performance of the season when despatching the hitherto invincible looking St Helens in the Challenge Cup semi final in Bolton. The Saints were simply blown away in the first half by a team that looked stronger, fitter and keener. The desire Dragons showed was amazing and they rightly progressed.

With a final against Warrington at Wembley to look forward to, Steve McNamara took the opportunity to rest several key players. The two matches between the semi and the final saw the Dragons well beaten at the Wolves and at home to Wigan.

The 25th August will go down in sporting history as the first time a French club has won an English domestic cup competition.

Or words to that effect.

The fact there were clubs from all over the UK and a North American entrant makes the Challenge Cup a unique prospect.

The final was a nervy affair and it didn’t take long for the touch paper to be lit when Lewis Tierney went over from close range to open the scoring.

Whilst Warrington went close on several occasions and kept the game down to a single score, the Dracs were inspired by Tony Gigot and took a deserving win.

It was a brilliant occasion and one that the coach and players rightly milked after the stick they had taken earlier in the season.

Catalans had arrived as a rugby club and this will hopefully be seen in years to come as the sort of shot in the arm the game needed.

We can but dream!

Three straight league defeats followed the cup win, but by now, everyone was in party mode.
For the record they were away to Castleford, at home to St Helens and away to Wakefield.

The season finished positively with wins at Hull and at to Huddersfield and you could consider the top 8 final position an improvement after the club had faced Leigh in the Million Pound game the season before.

In summing up there were a couple of key personnel who ensure success this season. The signing of Josh Drinkwater and the return of Tony Gigot meant some of the flair we had been missing came back. Remy Casty led from the front and I am even happy to heap some praise on the coach.
He said they would start slowly (and he was certainly right about that), but he also believed his players would come good and they did.

It was a memorable season, mainly for winning the cup, something that might never be repeated but certainly won’t be forgotten.

Let’s see what 2019 brings.

Merry Christmas

..
You filthy animals !!

JD gets a club

Former Dragons half back Josh Drinkwater has finally found a Super league club for 2019.

After failing to agree terms at the Stade GB, the Australian left at the end of 2018, albeit with a Challenge Cup winners medal.

Hull KR have signed him after rumoured  moves to Leeds and Warrington didn't materialise.

We'd like to wish him luck.

2019 Pre season friendlies

The Dragons have confirmed their 2019 pre-season schedule and then will not be leaving Perpignan, let alone the Hexagon of France.

18th January - We will be facing the best of Elite 1 (so maybe Romain Blanco) in a challenge match. That should be interesting and quite competitive.

In recent seasons we've had some bad experiences facing domestic players and competitions and whilst my research can't find it, I seem to remember us losing to an all-starts side a few years back.

25th January - We will be facing Toulouse Olympique at home in a match that will be as close to a real match as a friendly can be.

Toulouse will be keen to put one over the Challenge Cup holders and show the sort of form that saw them go close in the Championship last year.

We lost to them in an away friendly previously so will be keen to show we are the kings of France in this one.

Both matches are at the Stade Gilbert Brutus with a 19:30hrs start time

James to appear on Super League Pod (UPDATED WITH LINK TO SHOW)

The excellent Super League Pod show has been busily recording season preview pieces with supporters of the clubs involved in the 2019 competition.

Fresh from his appearance post Challenge Cup, I have managed to get a second appearance on the show and discussed the 2018 achievements along with a cautious (as you'd expect from me!) evaluation of the clubs chances next year.

This post will be updated with a link to listen to the show once its available so keep checking back.

It only remains for me to thank Mark at the SLPod for having me back on again and apologies for the technical issues that brought recording to an end.

I may need to upgrade my studio from the back of a Renault Scenic to something more palatial!

Carcassonne 18-20 St Esteve

We are now 2 from 3 in Elite 1 this season after a narrow win over Carcassonne Saturday evening.

BBC Sport goes Dragons mad...

Alongside the news that BBC's Sports Personality of the Year awards this year were honouring the Catalans Dragons after their epic Challenge Cup win, the club were also behind door number three of the broadcasters online advent calendar.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/rugby-league/46359064

Never will I tire of watching this!!!

It's not April 1st is it?

https://www.rugby-league.com/article/54073/tony-adams-mbe-to-become-rugby-football-league-president

Don't worry, I have checked the calendar and no, I haven't slept through the rest of the winter like a hibernating squirrel.

Former Arsenal and England centre back Tony Adams is to become the new President of the RFL.

In a week where the organisation has been widely criticised for its desire to charge a bond to clubs with fewer physical supporters to ensure they are insured should these clubs get to a Challenge Cup final, Brian Barwick has brought in Adams along with some other bloke who isn't nearly as famous.

Now I am a Southerner (even if you count my new home in Lincolnshire) and I'd wager that I know a considerable amount more about the sport than Adams.

It's a mind boggling decision even if you account for the fact that through his Sporting Chance charity, big Tone (as he is known down the Holloway Road) has lots of sporting persons welfare experience.

Naturally we wish him well.

And that, as far as I am concerned... sums it all up!

FFR XII clears the way for the Camp Nou

In a really positive move, showing joined up thinking, the FFR XII have postponed all domestic rugby league over the weekend of 18th May.

This will allow supporters, players and officials of all clubs from the Elite competition down to make the short trip over the border to Barcelona for Catalans vs Wigan.

We hear commentators and analysts across UK rugby league calling for an approach that maximises the events available to the sport and this will be seen as a positive sign for the game.

First image of Sam Tomkins training with Dragons.

See more on the Dragons official website by clicking here.

After his recovery from injury on England duty, Sam Tomkins has started work with his new Dragons team mates for the 2019 season.

There were plenty of other familiar faces amongst those having a run out on the Stade Gilbert Brutus pitch. All looked happy and focused, and they will need to be with Catalans amongst the favourites for honours again next season.

Rather than easing the pressure, Tomkins has cranked it up by saying he wants us to become perennial winners going forward.

Barcelona revisited

It's official. We're off to Barcelona.

May 18, Dragons v Wigan, at the legendary home of FC Barcelona.

Obviously we've been to the city before, to the former home of Espanyol and of the 1992 Olympics up on the hill at Montjuic where just short of 20,000 people saw Warrington win a tough game on a humid night before getting stuck into the beers and paella. (And you getting heatstroke, Dobson - Ed)

20,000, it seems needless to say, will look lost inside the Nou Camp which seats just under a hundred thousand. The club - and their Wigan counterparts - have it all to do to sell this to the wider Barcelona public. For our part, we're getting the passports renewed now while we think on. This is one not to be missed.

Dragons tease us with Tweet...

Tuesday 27 November 2018

Gelling-gate is a thing...

Anthony Gelling was linked with Catalans last season before signing a contract to appear for Widnes Vikings over the next three seasons, we believe.

However reports of the Dragons desire to sign the player wont go away leading Widnes to issue a statement confirming that he is on contract with them and expected to report for pre-season.

He was a pretty decent player at Wigan a couple of seasons back and will probably not be too keen to appear in the Championship.

However a deals a deal and if he has signed with Widnes this could get messy if Catalans do want him.

My feeling is that his agent will try and get him out of his Widnes contract citing their relegation as a circumstance. If that fails I suspect Dragons will need to pay a fee to secure him compensating Widnes. But sport being sport I don't see us offering money until we need to!

Closure of roads delays season opener

The domestic league Elite1 started over the weekend, a couple of weeks behind the French second tier.

However St Esteve were denied by road closures leading the mutual agreement with Albi to postpone.

This weekend we will belatedly kick off the season at Limoux.

Our adopted French league second team Palau Broncos were also hit by the chaos with their encounter at Toulouse also postponed.

Thursday 22 November 2018

Pomeroy back to play Elite 1

Catalans have resigned Aussie Ben Pomeroy latterly of Warrington Wolves.

The red card machine will boost the average age of the clubs Elite 1 players which is currently in the early 20s.

Welcome back Ben.

Additions to the coaching staff

Jonathan Jones has joined Dragons from Everton and will take up the role of Assistant strength and conditioning coach under Rich Hunswicks.

This afternoon it has been announced that former Widnes man Eammon O'Carroll has joined as assistant to Steve McNamara. Whether this means a change in role for Thomas Bosc, I don't know.

On the playing front there are reports that despite massive interest from back in the NRL, Kenny Edwards has agreed to see out the remaining year on his contract.

Wednesday 14 November 2018

Anfield date with Wakefield

Catalans will play Wakefield Trinity at the 2019 Magic Weekend.

The match is on 25th May.

Palau win pre-season tournament

Wins over Catalans and Limoux saw Palau Broncos crowned the winners of the Ambert Challenge pre-season competition in Pia.

Coached by ex-Dragons legend, Olivier Elima the Broncos will be keen to improve on their Elite 1 performances this season with the club aiming for the top three.

2019 Super League Fixtures Released

from Catalans Dragons official website.

For more click here.

Its going to be a tough start for Dragons who face Castleford away in the opening weekend.

The first home match is against the rejuvinated Huddersfield Giants before another tough trip back over to the UK to face Wakefield.

This will all be before the end of February when the pitches and temperature will most likely bring out the worst of the Dracs and we might see some meek surrenders!

You never know though of course and it would be a great start to the season should we get much out of those games.

Dragons kick off their domestic preparations this coming Friday

The French league side of the Catalans club will start their Elite 1 preparations this Friday in a glittering three way tournament with local rivals Limoux and Palau.

Hosted by the Pia club, the three sides will play single halved matches against both sides with Palau vs Limoux in the middle.

Click here to read about the competition on the clubs official website.

It will be interesting to see how all three go ahead of the season starting.

We will bring you the scores once we get them.

Dragons release 2019 kits (Updated with O'neills launch video)

Catalans Dragons have released their first Oneills kits this evening.

The Irish manufacturer has taken over from long term supplier ISC. For me this is the nicest kit since the second one the club had all those years ago.

I am a traditionalist so the inclusion of a proper button collar is very welcome indeed. The famous Sang-et-Or is well used and despite those who will compare our home kit to St Helens, I feel they are different enough to stand out.

The away kit is a nice departure from some of the terrible colour combinations we had in the latter days of ISC. Blue and Salmon anyone ?

So... which of the two will I be buying tomorrow when the online store opens?

Probably both !

2018 Sang et Or Player of the Season

We are delighted to announce that the winner of our 2018 award is Tony Gigot.

Picture from www.catalansdragons.com

Tony follows in the footsteps of such greats as Morgan Escare and Steve Bell (Not really) in winning this award voted for by British fans of the club.

It's indicative of the season the club has had that Tony was the winner ahead of a gaggle of other contenders including Remy Casty, Michael McIlorum and so on.

The club has had an ultimately successful season on the park by winning the challenge cup, but this has come about through a collective effort as opposed to having a single stand out performer.

Gigot's was the winner having picked up the man of the match award in the Challenge Cup final and off the back of two months of scintillating play.

Let's not forget though that he wasn't available at the start of the season, his drugs contretemps having resurfaced and his ban reapplied.

As a cycling fan his ban never quite sat right with me. I have a quarter of century of my heroes not having been honest and real and I had a feeling of there being no smoke without fire.

But Tony was cleared to return and play and his return to the side was the precursor to our best period of play of the whole season.

The team were down and out at Easter, rock bottom of the Super League having had 40 points put on them at Salford. The coach was reportedly hanging on by a thread having long been past the vote of confidence and many feared the sharpening on Bernard's famed meat cleaver.

But with a scratchy win at York and a home drubbing of Huddersfield under their belts, the team grew into the campaign and Tony was instrumental in getting the pressure off by making the top 8.

For many that was season done, mission accomplished. For Gigot it was merely a challenge to try and elevate his game even more and the reward was a day out at Wembley and the most incredible day of them all.

After that high, Tony seemed to pick his games. Our family trekked up from Lincolnshire to Castleford only to see him attached to massive headphones posing for selfies pitch side. He was being rested!

The end of the season has seen rumours about the massive wealth in the rugby union top 14 looking to turn Gigots head and make him one of their stars.

I hope that after les Dracs showed him a lot of loyalty in those dark days of his ban, he would be keen to stay and repay the fans and club.

I don't want another Lance Armstrong on my hands do I?

Monday 15 October 2018

Tomkins to have delayed debut

Catalans new star signing will have to wait an extra week to make his bow for us having picked up a one game ban for his knee lunge tackle in the Super League Grand Final over the weekend.

In their wisdom the RFL are allowing Sam to serve his ban in a pre season friendly rather than miss a competitive game.. and we say the powers that be in the game are against us eh?

Batieri signs on for 2 more years

Catalans star Jason Batieri has signed a new 2 year deal with the Perpignan club.

This is a top piece of recruitment and he will be an integral part of the club going forward.

Monday 8 October 2018

Le Derby is back...

Massive congratulations to London Broncos on getting promoted back into Super League.

Special mention to our old mat Eloi Pellisier on playing his part in the win.

Hall Of Fame: Louis Anderson

By the time Louis Anderson made his Super League bow, he was 23 yet seemed to have been around for a long time already having played three seasons with the NZ Warriors. Perhaps that is down to his brother Vinnie, five years his senior, already having played three years with St Helens by the time Warrington signed him up.

After 104 games for the Wire - and 104 points quite poetically - in four years, he made the switch to Perpignan. It wasn't perhaps the most marquee of signings, with the very greatest of respect, but he quickly settled into the club.

An initial three-year deal turned into a seven-season spell with the club and there never seemed any threat of him leaving the Gilbert Brutus in that time. Bar one season in the number 8 jersey, he quickly became a mainstay in the back row and a unit around which the Dragons pack could be built.

Rarely flashy but always dependable, his win percentage stats are remarkable. Basically, if he played, the more likely were the Dragons to win.

The true test of a player is how they are regarded by their peers. Here, note Alex Chan and Giants prop Suaia Matagi giving Louis the farewell haka after his final Dragons appearance before retirement.

He'll be tough to replace alright.

Dragons 2018 Show Reel Released

... I would imagine its pretty light until mid April !

Thomas Bosc - Hall of Fame Entry

The word legend gets bandied about way too much in modern life nowadays.

Someone who gets through a reality show and then releases a couple of moderately successful albums can become a “legend” of the music industry, and that’s not right.

In sport you only need to be a handsomely paid footballer and bag a league title amongst a group of world class players to be judged as integral which for me doesn’t sit quite right.

Fortunately we take all of these factors into account before opening the door to the Sang-et-Or hall of Fame and this inductee deserves a statue at the Stade Gilbert Brutus, such has been his impact to this day and hopefully beyond.

Thomas Bosc in stats

Source Wikipedia

Thomas Bosc has been a one club man and was there at the very start of the unified Catalans club.
Bosc has played several positions including the wing, full back and scrum half. His creative play led to an impressive 1 try in every 4 matches across his career and over 1300 points thanks to his kicking.
But Bosc was more than that. He was a player who dug in when the going got tough, and would often be seen playing on covered in bandages and head dressings. He loved playing in our derby with London and scored one of the Dragons greatest ever try’s with a left foot, right foot dink over defenders before gathering to dive under the sticks.

It was an Easter treat that I will never forget.

Inevitably as time caught up with the great man he was preserved and played less frequently, but when his club needed him, he was ready and willing to play.

I remember some wing cameos as the end of his career drew near. These I will cherish as I knew we wouldn’t be seeing him for much longer.

When his retirement came, the Dragons were wise enough to keep him in and around the club. He took on coaching for the domestic league side (U23s) but after a terrible start to 2018 Steve McNamara soon promoted him to join him in the first team dugout.

And that’s the image of Bosc we see most regularly now. Headphones on, prowling the touchline or jogging on to offer some tactical tweak when a stoppage in play allows.

The guy is an absolute legend (a proper one) and epitomises the creative flair and flamboyance that our club is renowned for. I hope he stays with us forever such is the reverence Thomas is held in.

Saints get beaten so we can announce Smith

In the most unsurprising transfer of the winter so far (ahem!), Catalans Dragons have signed Matty Smith from St Helens.

The timing of the announcement came just minutes after St Helens were dumped out of the Super League play offs by Warrington Wolves.

Smith joins on a two year contract.

Let's see if he is more Scott Dureau than Brent Webb eh?

Aside from Smith joining we had the pain of watching Josh Drinkwater clearing his locker on Instagram. Isn't the internet wonderful eh?

Monday 1 October 2018

Super Remy makes dream team..

Dragons star Remy Casty has been named in this season's Super League Dream Team.

Its thoroughly deserved, especially on his performances in the second half of the season where his leadership and metre making runs were instrumental in getting his team on the front foot.

Four up for Mead as Dracs sign off in style

Forget that for periods of this game there was a level of malaise similar to the opening parts of the season.

Put to one side that we have had relegation form since the Cup Final back in August.
Just revel in the fact that the most successful season in the clubs history has ended in style.

David Mead has played himself into the best form of his opening season at the Dracs over recent weeks and bagged four tries in the sort of comeback we usually have to watch from other teams against us.

To be fair both sides could have been forgiven for being on the beach. Their goals of getting in the top 8 and being exempt from the fear of relegation having been fulfilled. The Dragons and the Giants will be setting themselves loftier targets for next year.

We will break the season down in due course but this one ended with the bizarre sight of Michael McIlorum on the pitch with his pet dogs.

Only in rugby league…

Thursday 27 September 2018

Rugby's coming home...

And so the 2018 season ends this weekend with the second visit of Huddersfield to the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

Earlier in the season it mattered. The Giants and Dracs were at the bottom of the league and desperate for a super run to save their season.

Catalans won easily on the night, and both clubs did embark on a baffling series of results which culminated in them both making the super 8s.

Even funnier was that this was at the expense of Leeds.

This match sees nothing to play for (to be fair we've been in that position for weeks).

So for one last time in the Super League season we will say Bon Chance to the Dracs.

By Monday we will be looking forward to 2019...

Low key it might have been, but a wins a win

I must admit to only having watched the highlights of this one rather than sitting through the full game.

It was enough however to see that this was as low key occasion as would have been expected. For the fans that did gather in rainy Humberside the score line was a nice swingometer between the two clubs. The lack of quality and interest of both sides didn’t detract from the fact that Catalans were looking for that rarest of things, a win on the road.

Hull were looking to avoid some of the hammerings of recent weeks. So both teams will have gone away with both objectives achieved and pride intact.

Regular on our forum “Catalanglais” was at the game and filed this report along with player ratings.

We were hopeless at the start and would have conceded several tries to anyone else. But we scored twice and they did not get ahead until the the last 10 minutes .We then scored 2 excellent tries.

Marks out of 10
Gigot 4 -1 good try ,but poor in defence
Tierney 2 -clearly badly injured in the warm up and dropped many high balls
Mead 7
Wiliame 8
Thornley 9 -possibly his best ever game for us

Can Hull away end the boredom?

Two sides who are bang out of form for different reasons.

Dracs are supposedly still celebrating their first trophy and whatever has happened outside of that glorious day at Wembley this season will be seen a success, and rightly so.

Hull have disintegrated as a result of injury and losing big matches such as the Challenge Cup quarter final.

In recent weeks both teams have been accused of clocking off for the winter. Hull especially having conceded over 100 points in two games including over 70 at Wakey and 80 at Wire. However I watched them against Castleford the other night and I felt there were positive signs and despite being well down on the scoreboard at half time they actually finished strongly.

Look, let's not beat about the bush here. If Hull could have hand picked a team to play this week to give them a chance of ending their horrific run it would have been us.

We haven't reached the heights of the Macron or Wembley since those days and my feeling is that we wont in this one either.

I try not to align my thoughts with Garry Schofield too often (no offence Garry!) but he had the Super 8's bob on with his comment on Forty 20 Live this week.

These games are a colossal waste of time and contain no drama, no dependencies on the outcome and will just be played out by teams waiting for a holiday.

I can't remember where in the show his rant came (as there are always plenty !!) but here is the show below...

I hope Catalans prove me wrong a get a win on the board before the end of the 2018 Super League season, but my breath is not held...

...as I might die.

Dragons release retro looking Wembley shirt

Poll made irrelevant !

Josh Drinkwater and Catalans President Bernard Gausch have both confirmed that the talented back has closed off negotiations with the club.

Sad to see him go and possibly flourish elsewhere as he will always be a part of the clubs history.

Dragons beaten at Wakefield... but was this to be expected?

I suppose we did ask for a bit of fight…

However the result was as expected and if you can get out old website to load (and it will intermittently) you will see the sort of words and phrases we spoke earlier in the season applying today.

Dragons have clocked off haven’t they?

And I suppose back at the start of the year when we talked about “enough being enough” and the effort being described as “disgraceful” we’d have taken an 8th place finish in the Super League.
That sense of perspective is key at this stage. Back at Easter I wasn’t interested in a Challenge Cup win, I just wanted to avoid the Million Pound Game again.

So I suppose the players can be forgiven for a post Wembley dip.

I do still want to reiterate I said before this match, if we want to win titles we have to avoid post big game reductions in performance. Wigan get up for big game after big game. St Helens can get up for big game after big game, and until Catalans can match those performance levels they won’t be considered favourites over a long season.

Of course since they started hitting form and getting results the Dragons side has been on a roll. So I do have to bear that in mind, but I remain to be convinced we’ll win the Super League any time soon.

What a player and legend Scott Dureau has been for the Catalans Dragons club.

He was that rarest of overseas signings in so far as being a player who slotted in straight away taking on the creative role in the halves along with goal kicking… but more of that anon.

“Biscuit” was backed up by a wonderful and supportive family unit and bought into the Dragons ethos. I absolutely loved the guy and aside from that moment I have another that I want to share.
After his terrible eye tumour he battled back to be in the Dragons line up before a comeback try against London at Magic Weekend. It was from close range and a dab down so not one that took much scoring, however it was a key moment in his rehabilitation and one that brought a massive smile to this correspondents face.

His presence behind such legendary Dragons forwards as Ferriol and Elima saw him gain time and space to make a pass or a kick usually with Damian Blanch on the end getting four points.

There is one moment which of course will remain top of mind for any Dragons fan. That moment at Langtree Park when Daryl Millard finished off that ad hoc play on the 5th tackle and beyond the full time hooter.

The try was quite something, the kick even more so as plenty of time elapsed between the pandemonium of the touch down and Dureau lining up the kick.

His deep breaths and rolling of the shoulders as he lined it up had me quaking in my seat.
But he nailed it, of course he nailed it.

Despite not being the same player after his eye surgery, and who would be?, his final stats saw him score north of 800 points for the club and score tries at a rate of almost one in every three matches.
Adding this guy to the hall of fame is a total no brainer. A legend and someone who was part of the most flamboyant and exciting Dragons sides in their history.

Damian Blanch - Hall of Fame Entry

Damien Blanch is the latest former Dragon to be added to the Sang et Or Hall of Fame.
Blanch was not considered for inclusion until he retired from playing, something he confirmed on social media recently after leaving Thirroul Butchers.

The winger arrived at Gilbert Brutus from Wakefield in the winter of 2010 and set about replacing look a like Steve Bell in the Dracs fans affections.

His inclusion in the hall of fame is based on some amazing aerial tries and the sheer consistency of his stats.

In 75 appearance for Catalan Dragons he scored 46 tries. To put that into context he crossed the whitewash on average 0.6 times per game.

Many of those scores came from about a metre in the air and tight int the corner. He always seemed to score dramatic scores against Hull KR for some reason and will be forever revered as being part of the build up to that Daryl Millard try and Langtree Park.

Well done Damien, a worthy inclusion, you are still missed.

Is it important we win at Wakefield?

For me it is.

I want us to win every game and if the coaches desire to build a Super League winning side is ever to be fulfilled then we have to get up for games after big games… if that makes sense.

You don’t just win a couple of the big matches (I.e Saints semi and Wire final) and then just clock off. Big players want that intensity week in week out and can react to it and elevate their performance.
We need to add that to our game if we are ever going to be more than a cup side and Super 8’s cannon fodder.

Since the cup final we have been playing ok but not winning matches. The St Helens game was close but I think Steve McNamara will have targeted Wakey away as one to get us back to winning ways.
Getting over the line and getting points on the league ladder (regardless of whether you can finish no higher or lower in the season) is a massively positive habit to have. I hope they approach this like the cup final and give a display that gets the result.

So I will be looking for a number of things this week. I will be looking for a return to strong set completion (we have been dropping the ball too often since the hour mark in the cup final), positive aggressive defending (without giving away penalties), and innovative plays to get us in for some points.

Challenge Cup Final Highlights

Yaha gone.

Winger Fouad Yaha has left the club with immediate effect.

In the worst kept secret in sport, the Frenchman is changing codes and joining Agen rufc.

We call this doing a Pelo in homage to the boy Dimitri. Who was bad at union.

All the best Yaha !

Photos from Castleford away

Welcome to the website!

We hope you have stuck with us since April when our Freeteams site started to fall over.

In fact we haven't been able to update it since Josh Drinkwater signed for the club. Has much happened since then?

😉

It's been a journey and we have been pretty annoyed not to be able to share it with you, but we are back now and will be posting a bit more often to try and get back on track.

The format of the site is changing however. We aren't going to put the same level of emphasis on match information as the club website does such a brilliant job of that.

No, this site is now about stories and insight and we look forward to sharing that with you.

Old favourites like the "UK Dragons" branded online store, "Players List" and "Hall of Fame" have come with us (Phew) and we'd like to thank John Dobson for keeping them running on the RLFans forum we all populate and are keen to promote.

Please stick with and be patient as we get up and running.
