Heavy win for our other team Palau

Palau 84-18 TO XIII

The tough domestic campaign continues for Toulouse as Palau finally got going with this heavy win.

After getting close to Catalans the week before, Olivier Elima and his team battered the visitors with a 40+ point first half setting them on their way.

Williame leaves

The curse of our player of the season award has struck again with 2019 winner Brayden Williame leaving the Dragons today for an as yet un-named NRL club.

Sigh.

Whether this makes Steve McNamara's quote from earlier in the week that there would be no more signings obsolete, time will tell.

But this is a real blow.

Derby day delight for Dragons

Catalans continued their positive start to the season in Elite 1 with a narrow derby victory after heading inland to meet Palau Broncos.

The Broncos are coached by former Stade GB legend Olivier Elima and amongst their ex-Dragons contingent is Ben Pomeroy who scored in this match.

However the visitors were just too strong and pushed on to get their third win from four this winter.

Catalans lose unbeaten record

The fact that 28 of the 32 points Catalans conceded this weekend were scored by former players wont have been lost on the home sides Management's team.

Damien Cardace bagged a hat-trick and Cyril Stacul crossed the line with Remy Marginet kicking the points.

After a good start against Carcassonne at Le Weekend Magique this will have been a thud down to earth for a side who will be among the favourites for the league again.

2019 Season Review - It's not how you start...

Where to start with this season eh?

I am trying to be positive and look on the bright side. But 2019 tested my patience and that of a number of supporters thanks to some pathetic performances and heavy defeats. All played out against the back drop of some very un-Dragons like boring rugby league.

We went into the campaign remember, as holders of the Challenge Cup and with a number of international quality recruits, headlined by Sam Tomkins.

It didn't take too long into the season for that optimism to be shattered and for the realisation to set in that this team was going backwards and at a rapid rate of knots.

Steve McNamara had been one game from the sack last season before the cup run gave him, what the owner described as, a job for life. Lest we forget that run started after a narrow win at League 1 side (at the time) York City Knights.

How that "3 games to save your job" scenario managed to be avoided until the end of the summer this year remains a mystery. For me there is massive confusion of what is going on behind the scenes at the club.

Bernard Guasch has repeatedly said he will stick by his coach, even venturing to publicly offer him a two year contract extension to be tagged on to the year remaining on the current deal. However a shaky mobile phone film has emerged (and is on this website) appearing to show Guasch losing his rag totally with the players having burst in the changing rooms following a home defeat to London.

McNamara was sat there, inanimate as this tirade unfolded.

We know historically of tales of Bernard waving his meat cleaver at the players when they don't perform, but it feels like since McNamara arrived at the club he has been taking more of a back seat and being an owner as opposed to trying to coach.

This video was widely shared in the RL media, with many pundits using phrases such as "lame duck" with others speculating that the video had been deliberately leaked to further undermine a struggling coach.

Yet having said all that, the period of the season following the rumoured 3 games to save his job ultimatum saw the best play and results of the Catalans campaign.

So do the senior players want McNamara or not?

That remains to be seen in 2020, but whatever happens we need a clean and decisive piece of action from the boardroom should some of the nonsense we have have to put up with this year rear its head again.

On a week by week basis we started OK with an expected defeat as Castleford back up by some close games with Wakefield and Warrington. This was all before the home match with Salford which came to define our campaign.

The shock waves of a side (at that time) tipped for relegation putting over 40 points on one of the title favourites at their own ground were massive. Dragons committed two cardinal sins in this match and they never learned from them throughout the year.

They started badly and chucked it in.

This was rather than showing a modicum of spirit. Once the game looked like it was gone they stopped playing and just looked like they wanted to be anywhere other than on the pitch.

It was abject.

Bizarrely they went on to win their next two matches in tight circumstances before getting hammered at Wigan who at the time were struggling.

Easter was more positive with a win at London and at home to Castleford. Things were looking up for the Catalans with Sam Kasiano arriving to add influence up front, along with a filthy offload game.

A tight Magic Weekend win over Wakefield followed the seasons high watermark, a Camp Nou battering of Wigan in a thrilling match that saw the Dragons look like they were playing themselves into a bit of form.

But then it all went south. And in some style.

A 50 point beating ended their Challenge Cup defence at Hull and from that moment on the knives were out.

No club defending the trophy had shown such poor form in appearing to completely give up.

June then saw hammerings at Warrington, at home to London, at home to Hull (who got 50 again to prove it was no fluke), and relegation haunted Leeds.

None of these performances and scorelines were a surprise by this time. It was just a case of thankfully having had a good enough run in March and April to keep relegation threats at bay.

July saw the "three games to save your job" cry from the owner and the team responded by hammering Wakefield and winning a tight game at Huddersfield. Two wins off the bat was enough to see the backing return for McNamara.

They did collapse at Salford, but followed that up with their last win of the season at home to Warrington in early August. That in a game marred by off the pitch crowd violence.

After that the team downed tools again losing heavily at Leeds, at home to London, at home to Hull KR before another battering at Wigan.

The final day saw a bit of pride return with a narrow defeat at Huddersfield.

When you go back through these fixtures and results, it brings home just how bad this season has been.

There has been no building on the Challenge Cup win of 2018 and any momentum from that has been lost.

Key players like Tony Gigot and Kenny Edwards who looked part of a bright future for the club on that sunny day at Wembley have been poor and moved on.

We will move into talking about 2020 and whether James Maloney can be the catalyst for change in the coming weeks, but for now we want to put 2019 to bed and hope for improvement next season.

Thanks for supporting the website and keep reading, contributing and sharing. :)

James

2019 Sang et Or Most Valuable Player

Brayden Williame has been crowned our 2019 MVP after voting concluded on both our forum and the UK Supporters Facebook page.

Williame was a shining light in a bang average campaign for the Dragons, especially early in the year when he was dominant in attack and speedy in defence.

Despite a few badly timed injuries across his Catalans career, Brayden is a popular and effective member of the side.

Plus he scored that wonder try in the video above... and that was probably the clincher with the voters...

Knives sharpened for Dragons after season ends with yet another defeat

"That's all folks..."

Season 2019 has ended (thankfully) with another defeat on Friday evening. This time it was Huddersfield Giants who beat us to ensure their Superleague status.

London Broncos were relegated as a result of that and a number of other results elsewhere in the competition.

To be fair this was a slightly better performance by the Dragons, but with the play offs gone, this was a result with the pressure gone. Along with Leeds, we were the only team with nothing to play for in the last round of the season.

There were still individual errors that led to points however and if we'd been in a position to compete at the top of the table, these could have been costly.

As it was they just contributed to an end of season that has struggled to get to the level of mediocre.

Huddersfield Giants (10) 24

T : Louis Senior 4, Jermaine McGillvary
G : Jake Wardle 2

Dragons Catalans (14) 22

Its over, that's the positive and we will start our review and analysis in due course and once the dust has settled.

It won't be pretty though I have to say...

Another spineless performance away from home by the Dragons for whom defending seemed optional at times.

In fact, watch out for one of the Wigan tries where there were literally zero defenders in the tv camera shot.

Woeful.

Sigh, just one more shambolic display to go and then the post season fall out can start.

Join us for the Superleague Night of the Year

Join us at the Super League Awards Night

The Super League Awards, including the Steve Prescott Man of Steel, will be presented at a star-studded event at the Lowry Theatre, Media City, Manchester on Sunday October 6th 2019.

The event will have a very different look and feel to the traditional Man of Steel dinner. This year, for the first time, the fans are at the centre of the evening. There will be videos, interviews, music and, of course the opportunity to meet the stars of the game.

The atmosphere will be electric as the awards are presented - the noise from the fans will be huge as the tension mounts before the announcement of the winner of the 2019 Steve Prescott Man of Steel.

It will be fantastic to see as many Dragon fans as possible at the event - singing and wearing our colours with pride - Tickets are available by pushing the button below - Hope to see you there.

We have been allocated pockets around the theatre as you will see on the seating plan - let's see if we can surprise everyone and fill each pocket with Dragons! Fill up from the front.

Owner brands his club "a big mess"

Catalans supremo Bernard Guasch has never been one to mince his words (boom boom) and has been seen blowing his top at his players on a recent internet video.

He also didn't chop anything out (boom boom again) in a recent interview with the local paper in Perpignan.

https://www.lindependant.fr/2019/09/03/dragons-catalans-un-enorme-gachis-pour-le-president-bernard-guasch,8391693.php

More interestingly than his tirade against his own players was his desire to steak (enough now) his reputation on head coach Steve McNamara and his desire to ensure he sees out the final year of his contract in 2020, but also conclude a 2 year extension.

My feelings on the coach are pretty well known, so I can't say i am over enthused about this. However Bernard is closer to what is happening within the club (you would hope) and so I back him on this.

Shock at Stade GB! (who am I kidding we are rubbish)

Catalans Dragons (6) 6

T : David Mead
G : Tony Gigot

Hull KR (16) 24

T : Ryan Shaw 2, Danny McGuire
G : Ryan Shaw 6

Despite this passionate speech by the owner after the London defeat, Catalans couldn't turn it round at home to relegation haunted Hull KR.

The wheels are well and truly off now and I would be amazed if we get anywhere near another team in the remaining weeks of the season.

Post season rugby league has gone again for the Dragons and serious questions need to be asked.

Dragons true to form and beaten by London... again... its rubbish isnt it.

Catalans Dragons (0) 4

T : Brayden Wiliame

DG :

London Broncos (8) 17

T : Kieran Dixon, Alex Walker
G : Kieran Dixon 4
DG : Brock Lamb

The Dragons took heed of our harsh words about their performance and improved to just get beaten this week as opposed to hammered.

Thanks lads!

Can we just call this season over now and get on the beach? With their suspensions racking up after Ben Garcia got one in this match, half the team are already on holiday.

We could rant on like last week but what good does it do? For the main this season has been horrible with few highlights aside from the Camp Nou.

Interestingly Bernard seems to have started to lose patience with this mob and not before time. They have been sent to altitude this week to get some fitness and hopefully spike performance back at sea level. All public training sessions have also been cancelled.

There are no words...

Leeds Rhinos (16) 48

T : Ash Handley 2, Rhyse Martin, Richie Myler 2, Robert Lui, Luke Briscoe
G : Rhyse Martin 10

Catalans Dragons (8) 8

T : Mickael Goudemand
G : Tony Gigot 2

I would love to say I had such high hopes for the season but even back in January when I appeared on Super League Pod, I called how this campaign would go.

That doesn't make me a genius or some sort of mystic prophet. It makes me someone who knows a little bit about the game (and granted, a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous!) and who, along with loads of other people saw this coming.

I am not asking for accolade or showing a sense of pride in being correct, however. I just wish it was different.

It seems that whomever plays and whomever is the coach, we have no bottle for big games away from home and as soon as we go behind we are mentally switching off and seem desperate to get back on the plane and home.

This has been forever thus and if anyone thinks that James Maloney will make enough of a difference to change this mindset, I think you are wrong.

There is nothing to say about this game. We've said the same thing too many times now.

Get this season over please. Enough now.

As a nice aside...

Battle of Brutus sees violence overshadow win

Catalans Dragons (8) 30

T : Fouad Yaha, David Mead, Matt Whitley, Tony Gigot
G : Sam Tomkins 7

Warrington Wolves (4) 10

T : Jake Mamo, Chris Hill
G : Stefan Ratchford

Its hard to talk about this match without mentioning the disgraceful scenes in the stands and on the pitch but we have covered that elsewhere and want to talk about the match.

It was a decent game for the most part with no quarter asked or given and despite the heat and the fact both sides have seen more than enough of each other over the last year, it was (as coach Steve McNamara said in his press conference) the right result with the right team winning.

It was a positive to see Matt Whitley back and scoring tries along with Tony Gigot scoring an un Gigot like touchdown by bulldozing the line. I only hope his more positive body language is a pre-cursor to better form and maybe a signature on the contract he has yet to approve.

Greg Bird was back and starting to enjoy his swansong, along with Sam Tomkins whose goal kicking was impecable.

Warrington weren't there to make up the numbers and in other circumstances this would have been seen as a really good win.

However the losses in terms of players to injury (Yaha) and supsension (most of the others) means this could well be the last 2 points of the Dragons season and that we will be on the receiving end of another hammering at Leeds this week.

Matty Smith joins Warrington

In one of the most bizarre ever sporting transfers between two clubs at war since the violence which marred their weekend match, Matty Smith has left Catalans to join Warrington on loan for the rest of the season.

With most of our players suspended after the weekends debacle this seems an odd move at an odd time.

However its best Smith moves on after a nightmare time in the South of France where he has struggled to fit into the boots left vacant by Josh Drinkwater.

We wish him well.

One player who wont be coming in to bolster the Dragons numbers is Morgan Escare who joins Wakefield Trinity on loan.

Monday, 5 August 2019

Dragons suspension list is lengthy...

5 Dragons players have been suspended after the battle of the Brutus.

Brayden Williame, Micky McIlorum and Mika Simon get one game. Sam Tomkins gets three and Kenny Edwards a hearing.

David Mead just a caution.

And shock horror despite plenty of evidence to the contrary the RFL only think Tom Lineham was involved from Warrington.

Same old.

Saturday at Stade GB

We would like to add our feelings of horror and sadness regarding the violent outbreaks during the match with Warrington Wolves over the weekend.

As Dragons fans we take our responsibilities of supporting the club seriously and understand we are representing the whole community in doing so.

We do not accept or condone violence in any way shape or form and would echo both clubs statements in terms of rooting out and dealing with those involved.

On the field matters we will cover shortly.

Look who's playing again...

The king of the wing!!

Dragons show old frailties and fall to 6th

Having spent the last few weeks doing their best to get back in a cemented play off place, the Dragons went back to their old ways taking a right old beating by Salford Red Devils yesterday.

Almost half of the home sides players helped themselves to four points with ex-Dragon Krisnan Inu adding more pain from the tee.

Salford Red Devils (16) 40

T : Josh Johnson, Derrell Olpherts, Tui Lolohea, Niall Evalds, Kris Welham 2, Mark Flanagan
G : Krisnan Inu 3, Tui Lolohea 3

Catalans Dragons  (8) 14

T : Sam Kasiano, Brayden Wilame
G : Sam Tomkins 3

There is sill plenty to play for and we can get back on track with a win against Warrington in a couple of weeks, however this is a worrying sign.

Cynics might say the players were worried enough that they might get the coach to be sacked before turning on the style for a month before clocking off again... however we are willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Tomkins masterclass sees off Giants

Catalans Dragons 32 (22)
T: Broughton 2, Tomkins 3, Williame
G: Tomkins 4

Huddersfield Giants 28 (12)
T: I Senior 2, Gaskell, McIntosh, Jacob Wardle
G: Jacob Wardle 4

The damage was done in the first half as Sam Tomkins put on a virtuoso performance in the first half of the Super League clash at the Gasworks Ground in Huddersfield.

The home side's right-side defence was leakier than the UK Embassy in Washington as Tomkins prodded, probed and slid through for a hat-trick and had a hand in an another for the in-form Jodie Broughton.

Broughton and his centre partner Brayden Williame also got in on the act after the break until the inevitable fightback from the Giants thanks to a combination of the Dragons putting the cue in the rack and Kenny Edwards talking himself into a late yellow card - an expletive-ridden rant which earned him a one-match suspension - but the gap was too great and the Dragons closed out a rare away win.

Tomkins was playing in a dinner jacket in that first period. Nobody could get near him in probably his best performance in a Dragons shirt. Credit also to a depleted pack who still more than held their own and laid the platform from which the England star wove his magic.

It wasn't perfect, but it was plenty good enough and leaves the Dragons well in the hunt for those play-offs.

Wobbles over? Safe to say that there'll be tougher opposition than the Giants who remain just two points above the drop zone, but an away win is always a rare treat for long-suffering fans on UK shores. We'll take it.

Dragons end losing run

Catalans Dragons (20) 44

T : Jodie Broughton 3, Matt Whitley, Samisoni Langi, Kenny Edwards, Tony Gigot 2
G : Sam Tomkins 6

Wakefield Trinity (6) 10

T : Reece Lyne, Bill Tupou
G : Danny Brough

Jodie Broughton was the hero of the hour, potentially saving the job of a coach who has told him that he has no job come the end of the season.

The wonders of modern sport eh?

Broughton bagged a hat-trick with two of them steading the nerves of the Dragons before the interval.

They were able to go on and run away with the game in the second half.

It was welcome relief for a club under pressure after a potentially season ending run of consecutive defeats.

There will be those who point to returning players aiding the cause, and of course that is a factor. Although something has definitely been said behind the scenes. Players who were bang out of form suddenly sprung to life and put in a shift.

It was fantastic to watch and the weekend always feels better after a win.

So for now we will leave the Gigot contract, coaching situation and under performing star signings to one side and just enjoy what we have.

Enjoy the week Dragons fans.

Dragons Superfan with Betfred

Thanks to a reader of the site who tipped us off about this brilliant article about Dracy (I can't mention there is a real human inside the costume still, my kids are still young enough to believe!).

There are loads of interesting stories surrounding people who have a connection with the club and we would welcome any contributions to the site via the form on the right hand side of this page.

Domestic side win the league

St Estève XIII Catalan  (4) 32

T  : Ben Pomeroy, Paul Seguier, Arthur Mourgue, Ugo Perez, Alexis Meresta-Doucet
G  : Robin Brochon 6

Carcassonne  (22) 24

T  : Vincent Albert, Luc Franco, Alexis Escamilla
G  : Alexis Alberola 4

Despite leaving the club (for a 2nd time) to return home to Australia, Ben Pomeroy got the Catalans up and running in this pulsating final.

He played his part along with a number of other first team peripheral figures in this win that secured the first domestic title since 2005.

After the farce of player ineligibility last year this will be a relief for those in the corridors of power at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

Well done to all connected.

More woe for Dragons as Leeds pile on the pain

Nothing much to say here anymore is there?

Week after week we get worse and worse and getting beaten convincingly at relegation threatened Leeds shows that there is so much work to be done.

I listened to the coach's post match press conference where he worryingly claimed that we were the better side for much of the match...

Thomas Bosc called it much better by telling the local paper L'Independant that it didn't matter how it happened this weeken, we had to find a way to beat Wakefield.

And what Thomas says goes...

In a period where good news has been hard to find, the French league side made the grand final by beating long time foes Lezignan.

Fans speak and want McNamara to stay

Our (albeit unscientific) Twitter poll has revealed a split fanbase within the Dragons.

52% of those who voted want Steve McNamara to remain at the Stade GB helm which might be narrow but is still a majority.

UK Supporters Club survey result

Survey - update

Thanks to everyone who completed the Survey Monkey - here is a summary of the responses
80% of you attend up to 3 games a season in the UK and over 90% attend up to 3 games a season in Perpignan.
  • Email was the most popular choice for keeping in touch but Facebook came in second so we will set up a Facebook Group.
  • 72% of you choose to attend the games based upon how close they are to home.
  • 80% want to buy merchandise from a UK outlet - I am pretty sure we can arrange this.
  • 40% said that they were likely to take part in events arranged prior to matches.
  • 43% said that they are likely to attend the Man of Steel event at the Lowry Theatre, Salford. I will get this organised to make tickets available.
  • The most popular suggestions were - pre-game meet-ups and meet the player events.

More to follow...

Owner sharpens his cleaver and tells press his trigger finger is poised...

Catalans owner Bernard Guasch has given Steve McNamara and the players three weeks to save their season and jobs after the latest humiliation over the weekend.

The Dragons folded yet again and saw their play off hopes take a serious, serious blow.

They were out of this one before half time as in-form Hull FC torn them apart with one of the displays of this Super League season.

Credit is due to the visitors; I don’t want my whinging about my team to dilute from the way they are performing in recent weeks.

However, we are a Dragons focused website and it’s their fortunes we follow most closely.

With the club making so much effort off the park with new commercial partners, the Camp Nou trip and forming a UK supporters club, this total loss of form could not have come at a worst possible time.

There is nothing more we can add. We have said it all over the previous weeks and the sentence we wrote about the coaches choosing Matty Smith over Josh Drinkwater being a decision that could define their future looks even more pertinent now.

Do we want to lose those next few matches to see the back of the coach?

Of course not. We want our team to win every game. So let’s see how this big matches pan out now…

Dragons capitulate again

Catalans Dragons (8) 12

T : Fouad Yaha 3
G :

London Broncos (12) 30

T : Jordan Abdull, Rhys Williams 2, Elliot Kear, Kieran Dixon
G : Kieran Dixon 5

Where to start with this one eh?

Pathetic capitulations away from home we have become accustomed to over the years, but we are now developing the habit of getting beaten convincingly at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.
For London read Salford, read Hull etc. etc.

The coach admitted to the press that he has no idea why after a week of good training and recovery followed by a decent pre-game warm up his team folded after their first error in possession.

The vultures are now circling for the Dragons with a number of pundits starting to predict an unravelling of our season, which aside from the cup last season fits in with previous recent campaigns.

Steve McNamara himself has asked how his players can go from looking world beaters at the Camp Nou to unfit, uncoordinated and mentally weak in the space of a month.

He needs to solve that one and quick, and whilst he is doing that he needs to get a plan in place to get Tony Gigot back to his form of last season rather than the ghost of a rugby player he is in this campaign.

His contract situation won’t be helping, but he is making mistakes at the back and proving less of an influence going forward.

Pundits are desperate to pile in on Matty Smith and choosing him over the retention of Josh Drinkwater could yet prove to be pivotal in the future of the Coach.

We seem adept at changing back room personnel, lest we forget the CEO left on the eve of the season and we have a massive shake up of coaches at the end of 2017, but nothing seems to change in the players mindset.

When they go behind they stay behind and goodness only knows what Jake Connor and Albert Kelly will do to us this weekend.

The players are still not the right ones, the positions they are playing in are not getting the best out of what we have available to us and I still wonder if this is the right coach. And I know you must be bored of reading that, because I am bored of writing it.

Change is needed.

Juniors lose final late on.

Ok, so the Catalans lost, but we are open minded enough to recognise a good match when we see one and would advise you to enjoy the highlights of this one.

G :

Well it started well, you can say that for one thing. Although after that and especially the second half Dragons reverted to type by being swept away in Warrington.

You can watch the highlights for yourselves below but this is a post Camp Nou hangover that is turning into a slump and its interesting to see that the rugby league journalist community is beginning to ask questions of both the Dragons recruitment and coaching having seen them immune for the period we were defending the cup.

Matty Smith seems to be getting particular attention, but to expect him to come back after a year out and when you look back at the pre-season training photos, clearly not in match ready condition, what can you expect?

We've had the issues of where Sam Tomkins and Tony Gigot should play at the latter is worryingly a shadow of the Lance Todd winning player he was last season with rumours he is fluttering his goatee at the NRL refusing to go away.

The fact we are linked with a return for Morgan Escare adds credence to that rumour for me.

So where do we go from here?

Well finally a home match at the Stade Gilbert Brutus and with Steve McNamara having told the media we are homesick, nothing less than a win over London this weekend will do.

Join the #CatalanAssembly at Warrington

CATALANS DRAGONS are calling on UK-based support to sing them all the way to Old Trafford.

Les Dracs were dumped out of the Coral Challenge Cup last week at Hull and are now focusing all efforts on Super League success this season.

The club has identified a lack of support at away fixtures as a factor in their patchy away performances and have launched an initiative to stimulate and co-ordinate supporters.

Catalans traditionally brings few spectators to away games because of the cost to supporters of flights and accommodation on a regular basis throughout the season.

The club is conscious of the lack of support and the effect this can have on atmosphere at games, and also the team’s performances.

Coach Steve McNamara told Sang Et Or.com : “Any support we get in the UK is really appreciated. We understand that French fans cannot travel once a fortnight because the costs add up over a season.
“But over here in Perpignan we often see thousands of visiting fans because it’s a once-a-year trip. Their support is fantastic, vocal, it adds to the atmosphere at the game and can help lift the visiting team’s players.

“We’d like to have that kind of support when we play in the UK.”

“As players and coaches we are conscious of that lack of support. It can have an effect on games. We’ve seen how passionate and supportive the Catalans fans are in Perpignan and at Wembley and Camp Nou but we understand they cannot be there all of the time in the UK.

“If we can encourage a supporters group in the UK it would benefit everyone.”

Catalans have appointed a UK-based representative, Rugby League International Federation official and Super League Director Niel Wood
.
His role is to represent the club at all meetings in the UK and help t co-ordinate support for the Dragons.

He told Sang Et Or.com : “We have set up the framework for a UK Supporters Club based upon the fact that there were over 1200 people on the SL database who identified as a Dragons fan.

“We are working on channels of communication for these supporters and we intend to work with all the SL Clubs to get discounted offers for Dragons fans and to encourage them to congregate together at games - it already happens informally but it would be a powerful statement to have a regular group meeting together and having a presence in the stadium. Hopefully from there we can grow this to significant numbers.”

Yannick Rey, Dragons Media Manager, added: “We know we have fans in England and we want to try to co-ordinate them.
“We also have a small number of supporters who travel regularly, the objective is now to gather them to create a social bond. We feel this is very important, particularly for events such as the Magic Weekend or the Grand Final.”

Perpignan-based news agency Catalan Media has launched a #CatalanAssembly campaign to encourage supporters to attend Saturday’s Round 17 Super League clash at Warrington.
The game is televised live on Sky Sports and a spokesman for Catalan Media said: “We want to show people that it’s fun to be a Catalan fan, and you don’t have to live in France to support the club.
“We have secured a discount on tickets for Dragons supporters who will be assembling in Block Q at the Halliwell Jones.

“We’re encouraging everyone to wear blood and gold colours and sing the Catalan supporters’ songs.”

Hull put Dragons fire out...

There was an element of "told you so" with the Thursday night exit in the Challenge Cup.

Earlier in the day I had been in a discussion with someone connected with the club and expressed that I feared for us later.

My mindset was that we had the high of the Nou Camp and the high of Anfield, and that it might be a big ask for a Dragons side famed for its mental fragility to do it for a third match in a row.

Sadly I was proved right and despite a small revival after Hull's fast start, they raced away towards the end and embarrassed the Dragons.

We can talk about the holders wanting to make an impression on the league this season, but the facts were that two inconsistent sides played each other and fair play to Hull, they got it together better on the night.

Its a really sad end to our defence of the cup, but we have plenty of previous of getting hammered in Hull and until we get this away form sorted out, dreams of any sort of trophy are irrelevant.

Still, could be worse... could be Warrington next ! Gulp.

Domestic side back on track with St Gaudens win

Its been a topsy turvy few weeks for the Dragons reserve side. Before Easter they looked nailed on for the leaders shield and a play off place, but such is the squished up nature of the Elite 1 table a couple of poor results left them down the table.

Things have picked up of late and despite being a game ahead of second placed Lezignan and third placed Avignon a semi final derby against Olivier Elima and Palau Broncos looks a real possibility now.

With Toulon the scheduled last opponent being expunged that is the end of our regular season.

Momentum maintained as Dracs win at Magic

Pre match
Before I get into the game itself I wanted to cover some of the build up and pre-match promotion and marketing of our trip to the South of the region.

It has been an exciting few months since the announcement that the Dragons would be taking a match on the road to Barcelona. The club has been building it up nicely with lots of social media and dedicated merchandise range.

Of course there remains people who are critical of both the concept and how well the sport has got behind the match, but that's social media for you.

Both clubs pushed the game hard and when the official FC Barcelona socials start promoting a rugby game you know something has gone well.

I saw Tweets during the match comparing the crowd of over 30,000 with a sell out rugby union crowd a few years back. My feeling is that the international and European club game in the other sport is better developed as are their abilities to promote an occasion rather than the sport.

Rugby League relies on what happens on the park first and what happens in fan parks second. And do you know what? I am comfortable with that.

Match
The first half was not surprisingly forgettable with little running rugby as both teams seemed to take time to get a handle on their surroundings.

Greg Bird, who missed the Challenge Cup final along with much of this season, didn't last long into the game before a bad injury. That he was helping direct the team towards the end of the match with his subs bib being used as a sling tells you what you need to know about the guy. Legend.

With no  Little Sam or Matty Smith, the emphasis for creativity fell to Tony Gigot who had a tough first half and Big Sam who grew into the game.

There was lots of huffing and puffing but not too many points to show for the endeavour by the half way mark.

Thankfully the second half was much better.

After a let off when a Wigan try was chalked off for a foot in touch. The Dragons cut loose. David Mead (2), Middle Sam Langi and Big Sam blew Wigan away with a flurry of tries that started from short range using forward power before being run in from long range.

This was what the crowd had come to see. Dragons flinging the ball about with disregard and looking dangerous from all areas of the park.

Wigan weren't as bad as their coach seemed to indicate. They were just outplayed for that third 20 minute period and there were not too many teams who would have lived with us during that spell.

A late double for the visitors including a lovely kick and chase from Zak Hardaker made the score a bit closer. In the context of the 80 minutes I think it was a fair reflection.

What now?
The important thing now is that the game in Catalunya continues to build from this. I am not suggesting we go back every season, but maybe a game in Girona where there is similar airport access to Perpignan or Carcassonne?

The question now is whether the attendance yesterday will beat that at Anfield for Magic ?

A happy coach

Challenge Cup holders beat Doncaster to progress

G : Sam Tomkins, Tony Gigot 6

Doncaster (6) 6

T : Connor Bower
G : Matty Beharrell

When you consider how badly we struggled to beat York in our opening Challenge Cup appearance of last season, you can be justifiably pleased with both the performance and scoreline in this match.

First the negative in the form of an injury to Little Sam who might miss out on the Camp Nou this weekend based on reports in the media. Head Coach Steve McNamara played down the seriousness of Sam's back spasm Monday, but as the week goes on we will have to wait and see.

The positives include 12 tries including 2 for David Mead as he comes back from injury. Brayden Williame is arguably the best player in the Northern hemisphere at the moment and he helped himself to 4.

The draw hasn't been particularly kind to us with another away trip to Hull FC who beat Castleford. The UK Supporters club are getting involved with mustering Dracs fans so expect an email to drop into you inbox shortly.

Jodie Broughton makes his return in Domestic league win

Wing wizard Jodie Broughton started his latest comeback from injury and bagged a two try haul as Catalans won comfortably against Avignon over the weekend.

Fingers crossed this is the start of a good spell of health for Jodie and he can play his part in the remainder of the Super League season.

Behind enemy lines #2 - Boston (the Lincolnshire one)

My previous column was called "A Southerner in League" but as I have recently moved 40 minutes north into Lincolnshire this latest series has been re-branded as Behind Enemy Lines.

I suppose any game of rugby league that I go to where the Catalans aren't playing is going to be judged as such, although I have to say such was the experience at the Princes Royal Sports Arena, that this will become my regular haunt away from Perpignan.

The match last Saturday pitched the home side, the Boston Buccaneers with the brilliantly named visitors, Sherwood Forest Wolf Hunt.

The illusion of hardened rugby players lugging tree trucks around the forest was soon shattered by another spectator who told me "they are called Sherwood Forest, but we all know they are from Mansfield..."

They kept up appearances by wearing Lincoln green (along with red which made them look like a South Sydney side who rob from the rich to give to the poor!).

Entry was free and the bar was busy with a good selection of drinks in a plastic cup for pitch side consumption.

The match kicked off with a knock on from the visiting full back and you would have been forgiven for thinking this would be indicative of the match quality.

Far from it.

80 minutes later the game was 30-32 to the visitors but Boston had scored their second try in the last five minutes to give themselves a kick to tie it.

Despite having made some impressive conversions from pretty tight angles, the kick was missed and the visitors had claimed a hard earned and brilliantly contested win.

I have one simple sentance to close this piece... and it is something that the RFL should read, absorb and use.

"Give grassroots rugby league a try, you wont regret it"

Dragons fans wanted in the Midlands...

I am thinking of playing a few friendly games of touch and pass in the Peterborough summer league under the Catalans Dragons banner.

It's on a Friday evening and is six a side.

There is touch tackle and non-contact and its all very friendly and sociable.

To be in our squad the only proviso in a Dragons replica shirt so we can look uniform.

If you are interested please get in touch via our RLFans forum, Twitter or Facebook.

Teams can be made up of male, female and any age. There is no tackling so its safe for families to play.

Dragons more topsy than turvy at Hull

This strange old season took another twist with Catalans battered a weakened Hull side at the KC stadium last Friday evening.

Despite going behind to a Micky Paea try early on, were raced on to 18 points before the break.

Fouad Yaha scored a proper touchline hugger, Tony Gigot added a second before Brayden Willame scored the pick of the bunch with a show of real acceleration and determination.

The hype around Arthur Romano won't be subsiding after another strong performance and decent touch down. Matt Whitley and Samisoni Langi scored the remainder.

Lee Radford had a moan about injuries, Steve McNamara pointed to the nine injured players we had at home. And that was that.

2 from 2 over the Easter period sees Dragons go sixth

The Dragons finally managed to string two performances and two results together over the Easter period.

A potentially tricky looking away journey to London (who we could well have played into form) was navigated with consummate ease and no little flair, before a below par Castleford were swept away at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

The London match has always been a special one for us Southern Englanders and despite me having moved further North in recent times, I want us to beat them.

In fact I've been annoyed with the Broncos since my first visit to watch them play Dracs at the Stoop many years ago when a loud woman behind me kept advocating that Louis McCarthy-Scarsbrook "smash people into next week".

The following Easter was my first Sang-et-Or assignment on the Twitter feed and I incurred the wrath of the Dureau family when I criticised a missed conversion from Scott. Libby and Dennis were soon replying to my output and it was a valuable lesson learned!

We did get to meet Damian Blanch after the game which was a dream come true for me being a massive fan boi.

I seem to remember the final year of their previous Superleague spell saw them playing at Barnet (with I think Tony Gigot and Josh Drinkwater in their side) and a win for Dragons that was far closer than it should have been.

Olivier Elima was the hero we met after the game and its always worth mentioning that the picture of my wife and he still adorns the coffee mug she uses each morning.

This one was over well before the end of the game with Matt Whitely starring and scoring two tries along with an eye catching display from Arthur Romano.

We should have kept them off the scoreboard to be honest, but aside from some excellent tries and running rugby, Eloi Pellisier getting sent to the sin bin against his former club was an amusing highlight.

The final game of the Easter period saw Castleford vist in a game that was memorable for the weather in the South of France reportedly being colder than the temperature the Tigers had left Yorkshire from.

Unlike a number of recent home matches, the Dragons got off to a good start and built a decent lead in the match thanks to a combination of strong forward running, a bit of flair at the back and aggressive defence.

The Tigers were weakened by injury, but to fair, so were we. We hope that this is a sign of a bit more consistency coming into the Dragons play. The idea that we will hit massive highs and scale horrible depths fills me with a bit of trepidation!

Ladies beaten by Cas

In a match that was supposed to be the curtain raiser to the mens Superleague clash (before some dodgy weather meant it was moved until after), Cas Tigers ladies were too strong for the so-called Dragonettes in this HER RL Trophy match.

To celebrate the publicity of this match we will be adding a link to their fixtures and results on the left of the website homepage.

Tough run continues in domestic league

That long winning run seems a long time ago now as a second consecutive defeat (including last week at le weekend magique) sees the Catalans slip down to third.

Carcassonne now lead Elite 1 with Lezignan jumping over us into second after winning this one.

After such a good run in this mid part of the season, this could be a title blow.

Dragons show their inconsistency

It's happened again!!! we are trying to be positive and not blame the officials.

We'll leave that to others.

However the facts remain that Dragons lost again at home and are now clearly not in the title race.

Catalans stun league leaders in rainy Perpignan

Well, who saw that coming?

After a comprehensive defeat away to Wigan the previous weekend and a performance that finally saw Steve McNamara publicly blow his top, Dragons weren't expected to trouble St Helens too much on Saturday evening.

Despite some high profile absentees, Saints looked way too strong for a confidence drained Dragons and even the breezy, rainy weather seemed to favour the visitors.

The start had a familiar look about it with a Saints try although parity was soon restored when Little Sam Tomkins deft kick saw Fouad Yaha dot down in the corner for a score.

Tommy Makinson added a second for Saints when Yaha slipped before Sam Tomkins levelled it up.

There were some missed kicks and landed kicks and lots of excellent goal line defence before Tony Gigot finally got his 2019 season up and running with a great finish from some excellent Lucas Albert play.

Despite Saints throwing everything at the Dragons in the closing moments, we held on yay!!

It was a brilliantly crafted and executed win and shows that there could still be some life left in the Dragons season. They just need to be more consistent and maybe stick with the new positions after the much vaunted Little Sam/Tony G swap happened.
