Behind Enemy Lines #1

Coventry 32-28 Newcastle

This was a delightful afternoon for watching rugby league with a match just over an hour away from our new Lincolnshire home.

I’ve been to Butts Park (a ground which my kids still laugh at the name of) a couple of times and despite small crowds, there is a lot to admire in terms of support and atmosphere. The supporters really get behind their team and it must be a difficult environment for visiting teams to come to terms with.

(Although I do wish the announcer wouldn’t suffix every single piece of output by booming “Come on BEARS!!!!!!!”)

The ground access does suffer from being part of a one-way system and having driven around Cov for ages we finally made it to Butts Park. It’s a lot easier to get back out to the M6 than in, that’s for sure.

Parking was a realistic £3 and admission to the ground £12 for adults and free for juniors.
We made our way into the bar where there was some good choices of ale and regular burger and hot dog fayre.

Newcastle arrived after 2pm, their bus darting past the windows of the bar, but I’ve not seen that used as an excuse in any of the comment from the match (of which more to come) and for all I know they might have just driven in from the hotel next door!

After the wife, kids and I had a bit of a throw about of our ball next to the pitch, the game started and Cov raced into a quick two try lead. This was given to them by a nightmare first 20 minutes by Misi Taluapapa who got stripped one on one 15 metres from his own try line for the first before knocking on leading to the second.

He had one of those days where the ball bounced out of his hands, hit him on the back, a general nightmare.

Thunder are one of the league favourites though and battled back with a two quick scores, one from each wing.

Liam Finn hit my youngest with a penalty to touch (she is not prosecuting Liam) before the game breaking try from another defensive error got Coventry back in front on the half time hooter.
Thunder got back within a score at the start of the second half and were pressing for the next 10-15 minutes before the home side broke from their own half only to be stopped by a fantastic tackle close to the try line.

Rather than gain morale from this brilliant bit of defending, Newcastle conceded later in the set and that was how the scores remained despite some late pressure.

As we walked down the touchline to get to the exit the visiting players seemed angry with their performance and the result but there was nothing to suggest that Jason Payne would be removed from his post.

On another day that match could have comfortably been an away win, something the Bears were keen to celebrate at the end of the match. They knew how well they’d played and that they’d edged a close one.

All in all it was a really good afternoon in this balmy February heatwave we seem to be having. The quality of the play was a high level and the number of tries scored made it value for money.

We’ll be back.

But hopefully not to get hit on the head by a ball…

7th win on the spin in the domestic league (UPDATED)

Albi (6) 18

T : Spina, Ballinger, Tailhades
G : Fabre 3

St Estève XIII Catalan (14) 42

T : Laguerre, Belmas, J. Flovie 2, Albert, Mourgue , Pomeroy 2
G : J. Guasch, Albert  4

A Ben Pomeroy double put the icing on the cake as the league leading Catalans march on in Elite 1.

A sad sub plot to this match was a further injury to Jodie Broughton who will now be out of action long term once again.

Another weekend another away defeat...

We can copy and paste any number of match reports over on here for the last four seasons as Dragons proved again that they are at best 'flaky' on the road.

Fortunately I was enjoying an unseasonably warm week away in South Dorset (home of the Dorset Giants and Devon and Dorset Lions), so have nothing really to say about this...

Wakefield Trinity (20) 22

T : Tom Johnstone, David Fifita, James Batchelor
G : Danny Brough 5

Catalans Dragons (8) 12

T : Samisoni Langi 2
G : Sam Tomkins 2

Dragons launch third kit

With a bit of fanfare ahead of the Wakefield match, Catalans launched a new third/cup kit.

The two tone blue shirt is really smart and features a challenge cup logo on the bottom.

We believe a 4th new kit is landing in May for the Camp Nou match with Wigan.

Dracs join dual reg brigade

The Catalans have announced a dual reg agreement with championship side TO XII with Arthur Romano heading their way.

I'd always felt that with a domestic league across the winter and the loan system that we'd not need to place players elsewhere... shows what I know.

We wish the players that dual reg all the best at Toulouse.

The beast is back...

Fouad Yaha has rejoined the Dracs after a spell in some other random sport.

Welcome home beast !!

Domestic side edge another tight match

Villeneuve (4) 14

T : M. Carrasco, Dubertrand, Bachoukh
G : Decarnin

St Estève XIII Catalan (12) 18

T : Romano, Brochon, J. Flovie
G : Albert 3

The big news I suppose is that Roman Franco didn't score for once...ok sorry, the big news is that we have gone top of the league ahead of Lezignan by a points difference of 1.

Wohooo!

After the drama of the last game this was another single score win and from the stats above you can see that Lucas Albert's goal kicking was the difference, so well done to him.

Albert is a player who has been knocking around the first team for a while now and with Matty Smith having been questionable of fitness over the years, he might get some game time in 2019.

Catalans 27-10 Huddersfield - Dracs off the mark as Tomkins scores

Catalans Dragons (18) 27

T : Brayden Wiliame 2, Lewis Tierney, Sam Tomkins

G : Sam Tomkins 5

DG : Matty Smith

Huddersfield Giants (6) 10

T : Matt Frawley, Oliver Roberts

G : Izaac Farrell

DG :

Dragons : Tomkins, Wiliame, Langi, Whitley, Tierney, Gigot, Smith, Simon, McIlorum, Moa, Edwards, Jullien, Casty

Subs: Bousquet, Da Costa, Goudemand, Baitieri

After a low key start to our season at Castleford last week, the Dragons got up and running against Huddersfield at the Gilbert Brutus.

After going behind early on the Dragons took control and built a match winning lead thanks to quick fire Brayden Williame scores.

The Giants were playing a physical game with a couple of challenges to the neck area including one to Matt Whitley.

It was nice to get out of the game with minimal injury and the two points.

There is still plenty to work on, but the defence looked solid and the attacking lines were starting to gel.

One area of concern was the body language of Tony Gigot, who might played on the peripheral of the game and might be looking down to Australia with rumours he is being lined up as Ben Barba's replacement.

Domestic side in St Gaudens thriller

St Estève XIII Catalan (6) 24

T : Meresta-Doucet, Franco 2, J. Flovie, Albert

G : J. Guasch 2, Albert

St Gaudens (6) 20

T : Roux, Dumas, Trescasa

G : Chanet 4

Roman Franco bagged two tries to go clear at the top of the Elite1 try scoring table. However the Catalans needed golden point to see of a spirited St Gaudens side.

We move up to second in the league as a result of the win.

Castleford 20-4 Catalans

Castleford Tigers (12) 20

T : Paul McShane, Greg Eden 2
G : Paul McShane 4

Catalans Dragons (0) 4

T : Lewis Tierney

So amongst the #newbeginnings escaped ferrets and snow, a game of rugby league broke out here between two of the sides expected to make a dent in the upper reaches of the Superleague in 2019.

I will admit to being cynical and expecting Dragons to lose by more on the basis of (1) it was cold and (2) it was away from home.

However from my spies at the game and the highlights above it was clear that this wasn't quite the steamrollering we usually get in these opening rounds a long way from home.

The game was preambled by Sam Tomkins comments about visiting Cas and whilst I think they were taken out of context so whilst I understand what he was trying to say (It was supposed to be a compliment of sorts!), it fired up the home fans.

To some extent it detracted from Samkins debut and he will look at the Greg Eden try where he was beaten for pace on the outside as an area to work on.

Dragons will have definitely missed Greg Bird and that experience was shown in a number of key areas of the match at important points.

In the style of Catalans of old, were were too far behind before starting to rally, although it's encouraging to see us trying to move the point of attack from centres to edges to wings. I hope that's a foresight into the coming season and a desire to entertain a bit more than some of the fayre we endured in 2018.

I am not surprised that we lost the game. Castleford are one of the best sides at home, but its clear there are things to work on and improvements to be made.

Scott Dureau

News arrives this morning that former scrum-half and sang-et-or Hall Of Famer Scott Dureau is to undergo chemotherapy to treat cancer.

His current employers, Newcastle Knights, put out the following statement.

We can't really say much more than that, except to add that we know Scott's fighting spirit and that we wish him and his family all the very best in what could be a very tough period.
